Rockford Rotary Club, the oldest service club in Rockford approached the Rockford Park District in search of a location for a project to commemorate their 100 year anniversary in 2016.
In collaboration with the City of Rockford, Rockford Rotary Club selected a site within the West State Street Linear Park. The Rockford Rotary Centennial Project will feature a labyrinth, seating areas, landscape plantings and lighting. The project will be located at the southwest corner of West State Street and Avon. The Project is expected to cost $60,000 and will be bid and constructed as a part of the West State Street Linear Park phase 2 project led by the City of Rockford, which will be completed in 2016. Tonight, the Rockford Park District Board of Commissioners approved the donor agreement for the Rockford Rotary Centennial Project.
“This project is another example of the long standing relationship between Rockford Rotary Club and Rockford Park District. In 1983, Rockford Rotary Club donated $50,000 to the Rockford Park District to purchase Trolley Car 36, a very popular attraction along the riverfront,” said Laura Pigatti Williamson, Deputy Director of Capital Planning & Management.
West State Street Linear Park is owned by the City of Rockford, but the Rockford Park District maintains the park. Rockford Rotary Club will continue to fundraise to cover ongoing maintenance costs and will eventually coordinate a memorial paver program. The Rockford Park District Foundation will accept the financial donation and the Park District will work with the City of Rockford to install a construction sign and permanent plaque.
