The Learn to Skate program at Carlson Ice Arena provides a safe and exciting experience for the beginner as well as the more advanced skater. The program allows participants the ability to achieve the skills necessary to either skate for fun the rest of their lives, or participate competitively in hockey or figure skating.
Six-week group sessions are offered for beginner, intermediate, and advanced skill levels, and meet at Carlson Ice Arena in Loves Park once a week for 30-60 minutes, with skates provided. We offer a variety of program options, including: lessons, skill development, performances, and competitions. Classes are progressive, so as skills progress, participants will move on to the next level of classes. Returning skaters are placed based on previous levels completed.
Bonus Lesson Time! Lessons include 30 minutes on the ice, plus 15 minutes of practice time. This is a chance for the coach to give one-on-one guidance regarding the skill focus the participant is working to improve, or for the skaters just to have fun!
About Our Program
- Classes meet once a week, and skates are provided for all levels.
- Minimum class size is six skaters. We reserve the right to combine classes with fewer than two skaters.
- Skaters progress at their own rate, moving on to the next level only after required elements are mastered. All levels may be repeated until the requirements are met. The Rockford Park District reserves the right to move any skater between levels.
- If you need to miss your regular class, you can make it up if it is offered another time during the week. If not, you can use one of your public or freestyle session passes to practice.
- Certificates, medals and trophies are presented to skaters as skill advance.

- Arrive at the rink at least fifteen minutes before your scheduled group lesson.
- Check in at the Learn to Skate table.
- Go to the skate counter to get a pair of skates and put them on.
- For the first class, meet your instructor in the lobby at the designated area.
- Pay attention in class and ask questions if you don't understand a skill.
- Have fun!
What To Wear
Dress for warmth, including long pants and a jacket. Sweatpants or warm-up pants are ideal. Remember to bring gloves and a hat. Hair should be secured neatly off your face.

Tot Beginner Skate Lessons
This is a 30-minute lesson followed by a 15-minute practice for beginning skaters who want to get on the ice and start moving. Snowplow Sam 1-3 skill levels.

This is a 30-minute lesson followed by a 15-minute practice for beginning skaters looking to improve on-ice skills.

Beginner Skate Lessons - Basic 3
This is a 15-minute practice followed by a 30-minute lesson for beginning skaters looking to improve on-ice skills (Thursday classes will begin with a 30-minute lesson followed by a 15-minute practice).

Intermediate Skate Lessons
This is a 15-minute practice followed by a 30-minute lesson for intermediate skaters who want to continue mastering turns and spins. Basic 4, 5, and 6 skill levels.

Advanced Figure Skating
This is a 30-minute lesson with a 15-minute practice for advanced skaters who are ready to put it all together and want to be introduced to all the elements in skating, and possibly begin a competitive career. Basic 7 and 8; Freeskate 1-6 skill levels.

Adult Skate Lessons
You are never too old to try something new or work on improving a skill you loved in the past. Adult skate lessons include beginning to advanced levels. Join other adults on ice for some socialization, motivation, and challenge. 15 minutes of practice time followed by a 30-minute lesson.
Ice Skating Camps
Performance & Theatre on Ice
This new half-day camp introduces skaters to Performance and Theatre on Ice. Skaters will learn elements of choreography and skating movements. This camp will encourage participants to express themselves on ice, build rapport with other skaters, and work as a team, all while practicing skating skills. Skate with your friends, try something new, and have fun! Camp ends with a performance on Friday morning. Camp t-shirt included; lunch is not provided.

Freeze & Thaw Half-Day Summer Skills Camp
Skate with your friends, try something new, and have fun! This new half-day camp is designed to enhance your skating skills. You will work on and off the ice focusing on stretching, warm-up, power, stroking, jumps, and more. All skill levels welcome. Camp ends with a performance on Friday morning. Camp t-shirt included; lunch is not provided.
