History

The Rockford Park District Foundation was founded in 1979 to provide philanthropic support to the Rockford Park District. At that time, its primary purpose was to acquire needed land via donations, or to sell donated land that was not desired for parks (with the donor's permission). Since its inception in 1909, over 40% of the District's parkland has been donated.

In 1993, the District decided to reorganize the Foundation and to broaden its focus. A group of key community leaders agreed to serve on the Foundation board and an Executive Director was hired.

Since the reorganization, the Foundation has raised over $45 million.
